Renewing your Tier 4 Minnesota teaching license requires fulfilling specific professional development requirements and submitting documentation through your local continuing education committee or directly to PELSB if applicable. This article outlines the full process.

πŸ“… When Can I Renew?

A Tier 4 license is valid for five years and expires on June 30 of the expiration year. You can apply for renewal beginning January 1 of the renewal year.

πŸ“† What Do I Need to Renew?

You must complete and submit 125 clock hours of professional development earned during the five-year period immediately preceding renewal.

These hours must include training in the mandatory requirement areas currently required by state statute:

Mandatory CEU Topics (as of May 2024):

  • Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies

  • Accommodating, Modifying, and Adapting Curricula and Strategies

  • Scientifically-Based Reading Instruction

  • Key Warning Signs of Early-Onset Mental Illness in Children and Adolescents

  • Suicide Prevention (minimum 1 hour)

  • English Learner Instruction (InTASC-aligned)

  • Cultural Competency Training

  • American Indian History and Culture (Minnesota-specific)

πŸ“š Who Approves My CEUs?

CEUs must be reviewed and approved by your local continuing education committee, typically within the school district where you:

  • Work, or

  • Reside, if you are not currently employed in a Minnesota public school.

If you live and work outside Minnesota, your documentation can be submitted directly to PELSB for review.

🏒 Using Proserva to Track and Export Your CEUs

Proserva allows you to easily track your CEU progress and generate exportable summaries. You can:

  • Complete CEU coursework within the platform.

  • Export your CEU records for submission to your district committee or PELSB.

If your district uses Proserva for license renewal, the platform:

  • Enables CEU committees to efficiently review submitted coursework.

  • Simplifies documentation for submission to PELSB.

  • Can save districts over 1,000 hours annually in administrative time by replacing manual workflows.

πŸ’Ό How Do I Apply for Renewal?

Once your CEUs have been approved:

  1. Obtain approval from your local committee.

  2. Submit your renewal application through PELSB's online portal.

⚠️ Reminders:

  • Online CEUs are acceptable if they align with state standards.

  • Be sure to confirm that each of the mandatory areas is addressed in your CEU record.
